Antiviral Drugs

ANTI VIRAL DRUGS

Antiviral drugs used for treating viral infections. Antiviral drugs are antimicrobials, a larger group which also includes antibiotic, antifungal and antiparasitic drugs. They are relatively harmless to the host, and therefore can be used to treat infections.

COMMON PRESCRIBED DRUGS

1) ZOVIREX (Acyclovir Topical)

2) GARDASIL (Human Papillomavirus Quadrivalent Types 6, 11, 16, and 18)

BRIEF DESCRIPTION

  • Zovirex is a topical cream to reduce pain of herpes lesions and sores.
  • Gardasil is a vaccine against certain types of the human papillomavirus

COMMON ADVERSE REACTIONS

ZOVIREX – Headache, diarrhea, stomach pain, vomiting, loss of appetite

GARDASIL -  Hives, itching, blisters and vesicles near the injection site; swollen arms; swollen lymph nodes, burning, stabbing, severe and radiating pain at the injection site and in the affected limb during and after injection; nausea and vomiting; infections and skin ulcers.

HOMECARE RECOMMENDATIONS

Apply Zovirex to affected area 4-6x’s for 10 days

Gardasil is usually given as 3 injections at your doctor’s office, hospital, or clinic.

DENTAL CONSIDERATIONS

If sore is active do not perform treatment until it has scabbed over for fear of spreading to dental personnel. Dental health care worker should be aware of possible: 2) Allergic Reaction: Itching or Hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing  while performing treatment in the dental chair.
