Flossfish  review

This video will help you understand how to floss your braces. I think it is an excellent idea and i believe that it should motivate all of RDH’s in coming up with new ideas as contribution of our profession towards clients oral hygiene.

• Flossfish is not perfectly adapted at a C shape on the labial side due to the presence of the brackets.
• It is to thick to allow normal flossing motions.
• Patient will have to learn and adapt to a new flossing technique
• However it will be beneficial suggesting it to dental patients

NOTE

Since this product is new in the market it will be great if dental professionals that have had the chance to use it as an oral hygiene aiding tool, would leave a feedback or a review in our site.  It will help other professionals and clients as well understand the advantages and disadvantages of this product.

Restorations are divided in classes based on the location of caries. The classes of caries were discovered by G.V Black. This method of classifying dental caries and their methods of treatment are used universally around the world. Here are the six Black ’s classifications explained clinically with a video demonstration.

• Class I   Includes pits, fissures and lingual or buccal tips on anterior and posterior teeth
• Class II A class two caries is considered the tooth where caries is located just on posterior teeth in more then one surface. (I.e MO-MesialOcclusal caries or MOD-MesialOcclusalDistal caries).Class II/Part 1 Video

• Class III Involves only anterior teeth where caries is located interproximally.
  Class 3 Video
  
• Class IV This is the same as class III ( interproximal areas on anterior teeth) plus the incisal edge of the tooth .
  Class IV Video
  
  
• Class V Involves carries located on the cervical area of posterior and anterior teeth.
  Class V Video
  
• Class VI This classification includes the incisal edge of anterior teeth or the cusp edges of posterior teeth.

Many people are concerned of tooth discoloration because it’s a very common problem.

People of different ages can be affected, including here temporary (baby teeth) or permanent teeth. Teeth are considered to exhibit many color reflections (polychromatic). This colors can be absorbed and interpreted from our eyes in different  ways. This because the color of our teeth varies from many other factors for example: color of the gingiva,  shape of the tooth,  type and translucency of dentine and enamel. Specifically the translucency of enamel varies because of the degree of calification (Enamel has different stages of development therefore the thickness of enamel is different at the cervical third and incisal edge). One of the factors that influences tooth discoloration is stain. Stain is divided into two categories Extrinsic and Intrinsic stains.

What is an Extrinsic discoloration?

An extrinsic stain is a layer that surrounds the outer surface of our teeth and gives them that yellowish color. It is caused by external factors as:

1. Plaque, protein denaturation, bacteria layers
2. Exaggerated use of mouthwashes for e.g clorhexidine.
3. Liquids that contain colorants. The strongest beverages that have strong ability to stain teeth are : Coffee, Tea, Coca Cola etc
4. Foods can also stain teeth (e.g Cooking oils, fried foods, colorants in food, curry etc.)
5. Antibiotics like (erythromycin, amoxicillin).
6. Excessive iron supplements.

What is an intrinsic stain?

Pre-eruptive

Intrisic stain is the stain that is embedded within the tooth structure and the causes usually have to do with systemic disease or genetically developments (congenital). Causes of intrinsic stains include:

• Disease (Hematological disease, enamel or dentine disease, Liver disease)
• Medications ( Tetracycline “brownish color”, Excessive fluoride intake ” usually when this intake is excessive in children from ages 1-13″ ).

Post eruptive

• Trauma
• Primary or secondary caries.
• Dental restorative materials (may effect the dentine or enamel sometimes).
• Ageing (influence the regeneration of dentine reproduction).
• Smoking ( You can notice all  regular smokers have yellowish teeth).
• Some foods when used in long-term can cause intrinsic stain.

Smoking stain

The term discoloration and stain are both used in dentistry synonymously. Some discolorations come as a consequence of two types of stain Extrinsic and Intrinsic.

I can mention here the example of extrinsic stain that comes from nicotine. If one smokes for a long time nicotine has the ability to penetrate the tooth structure matrix and therefore become impossible for the clinician to remove it with regular prophylaxis (tooth polishing).
